QUEEN OF PEACE MONASTERY
RELIGIOUS + COMMUNITY
Modern Expression of the Monastic Tradition.
Complex residential, religious and administrative requirements were resolved in this monastery for a community of 20 nuns. The monastery is located in the agricultural lands of the Squamish Valley, surrounded by stunning views of snow-capped mountains. The 25,000 sq.ft. building consists of a multitude of unique spaces to support a deeply devoted monastic life. The architecture responds to monastic tradition and is influenced by contemporary culture. The building arises from its rocky cliffside site, reinforcing its connection to nature. Through natural light and expansive views, nature is present within each of the interior spaces. Contemplative ambulatory walks, integral to the Dominican tradition, are designed to allow continuous flow from spacious interior cloister walks to exterior courtyards and a network of landscaped paths beyond.
The Chapel is expressed with a heavy timber structure, recreating the dynamic of congregating below a canopy of trees. The complementary use of regional timbers and stone brings a natural warmth to the interior, inviting and intimating the sacred.
The Queen of Peace Monastery was recognized with the BC Woodworks Design Award for Interior Beauty of Wood.
